Sydney’s favourite boutique trance night, Digital Therapy, has come a long way in 2013. Along with the move from the Wolf Bar at Home nightclub to its new regular venue of the Civic Underground, it now regularly puts on a great mix of local talent and up-and-coming international DJs to an appreciative and growing audience. I’ve said it before, but that’s no reason not to say it again – the Civic Underground is a brilliant venue. Friendly staff and an intimate setting combine with a simply awesome sound system to create the perfect setting for great nights such as these. Incredibly, they have even improved Sydney’s best sound system since our previous trip to the Civic Underground five weeks earlier. The best just got better!

We arrived early, catching Big J‘s and then DJ Tonto‘s sets before Binary Finary started at 10.30. Catching up with friends, I noticed many new faces alongside the familiar ones – a sure sign that Digital Therapy is growing. Familiar tunes coming through the speakers included Binary Finary – 1998 (naturally!) and Binary Finary & Lele Tronique feat. Christina Novelli – Waiting For The Sun and the small dance floor was filling up.

Next up was Matt Bowdidge for his return to Digital Therapy. Matt played the last Digital Therapy at the Wolf Bar in December 2012 and is definitely the leading Australian DJ/producer of uplifting trance. He’s been plying his trade in the UK in the last few years, but hopefully we’ll get to see him in Sydney more often than just once a year in the future. He delivered another great set containing classics such as Armin van Buuren – Shivers and Paul van Dyk – For An Angel (the same remix that Bryan Kearney dropped the previous week at Stereosonic) as well as some of his own new tunes like My Reflection.

Taking over after Matt was Ireland’s Mark Leanings. Leanings has a similar 140BPM style to Bowdidge and he certainly kept the energy levels high and the dancing area full. There was a distinctly Irish trance flavour to the set, with John O’Callaghan classics like Big Sky and Find Yourself featuring. It was the first time I’ve heard Mark Leanings play and I really enjoyed it.

And closing out the night was Pablo Anon, with some great uplifting trance … Armin van Buuren – Communication, Dart Rayne & Yura Moonlight feat. Sarah Lynn – Silhouette (Allen & Envy Remix), Gareth Emery – Concrete Angel (John O’Callaghan Remix), Aly & Fila feat. Jwaydan – We Control The Sunlight and Paul van Dyk feat. Plumb – I Don’t Deserve You. I think it was the Giuseppe Ottaviani Remix, but it could have been the John O’Callaghan version – I wasn’t listening closely enough by this stage as two big nights in succession were taking their toll.

The night drew to a close with plenty of people still wanting more. I’m definitely looking forward to what Digital Therapy brings us in 2014. If they can build on the successes of this year, I’m sure it will be fantastic.

Many thanks to Luke Davids Photography for the photos.
